Amanda Sheehan, M.S.N., F.N.P.-B.C., N.P.-C., R.N.

Research and Clinical Nurse Practitioner, 2018-present

Amanda attended Northern Arizona University where she earned her BS in Psychology, Summa Cum Laude , with a minor in Chemistry. She worked at Joslin as a clinical research coordinator from 2004-2007. She was awarded an MS in Nursing from Simmons College and received an MS in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Massachusetts. We were lucky when she joined the Joslin family again in 2018. Amanda is currently working on clinical research studies focused on mechanisms and new treatment approaches for post-bariatric hypoglycemia, as well as hypoglycemia in patients without diabetes and without a history of bariatric surgery. She is also a key clinician on the Hypoglycemia Clinic team at Joslin.

Personal Statement

Many things intrigue me about hypoglycemia, but one in particular is the delicate neuro-hormonal balance that must remain in place to maintain awareness of low glucose levels, and the adaptation of thresholds of activation that occur to dynamic glucose levels. Physiologic responses to hypoglycemia diminish, and occur at lower and lower levels, the more frequently / recently it is experienced, just when one needs these warning cues the most. While this has been described in diabetes research, we are just beginning to investigate these phenomena in persons with hypoglycemia without diabetes.

Fun Facts

Amanda loves to go downhill skiing, playing Legos or kiva blocks with her children, running outside, yoga, and searching for (and testing) slowly absorbed forms of carbohydrate. Her favorite things to do in New England include skiing in the Mad River Valley with her family and the annual Fourth of July parade in Warren, Vermont. When Amanda is not working or having fun with her family, she enjoys listening to podcasts such as Rich Roll Pod Cast, Hidden Brain, and This American Life. She also grows a great kombucha!
